My name is Matt Graves.  I am a free-lance trumpet player and private teacher residing in Brooklyn, NY.

I was born and raised in San Jose, California.  Having been a trombone player in grade school, my father had a great love of music and provided me with an "in house" intro to brass playing when I was 7 years old after renting a trumpet for me.  Upon our arrival from the music store, one of the first things my mother said was, "Why, he'll never play that thing."  Right at that moment I proceeded to play each note from low c to middle c with a little patient coaching from Dad.

Dad taught me practical things like fingerings, reading music and playing simple melodies. Although he had no head for embouchure theories, he did instill in me the need to practice every day in order to improve.  I seemed to grasp the knack of playing early and soon became the star trumpet player in the local fourth grade band while still in the third grade.

I continued to play all through grade school.  Just after my High School graduation, in 1983, I had the opportunity to study with Claude Gordon in Northern California.  I studied for many years with Claude and went on to play professionally on Cruise Ships for a number of years.

Claude instilled in me a great respect and love for teaching.  He inspired me to teach and to write materials to help trumpet students.  Check out my "Books by Matt" section for more on this and my story of my experience studying with Claude.
